Beer

Beer is Good! I like dark or bitter types of beers like IPA’s, Porters and Stouts. If youv refuse to see-through beer or even “normal” beer, you may appreciate this page.

Below, are some of my favorite beers (in order of favoriteness!)

ABV = Alcohol By Volume
IBUs = International Bitterness Units (only really applicable to IPAs)

Bear Republic

Hop Rod Rye

ABV: 8%

IBUs: 90

Web Site

I love most of the beers from Bear Republic – a very high-end micro-brewery. The Hop Rod Rye (a take on Hot Rod) )is technically a “Rye” beer, but make no mistake, it is a killer IPA. I get a few of these big bottles for my birthday every year. They are not available in 6 packs or would get them more often.

Very bitter and tons of hoppy citrus flavor.
This on the top of my list for good reason – simply the best beer I have ever had!

Stone

Ruination IPA

ABV: 7.7%

IBUs: 100+

Web Site

The Stone brewery is also one of my all-time favorite brewerys being home to some of the best beers ever created. The “Ruination” is one of their strongest IPAs. Very close to the HopRod in intensity. I have only found this in big bottles as well which means that I only get a chance to taste it a few times a year. 🙁

Two Brothers

Heavy Handed IPA

ABV: 5.7%

IBUs: 62

Web Site

Incredible IPA brewed near the Chicago area. Very hard to find. Surprisingly low alcohol content for the taste. It is a very “nutty” type of IPA with some sweetness and hints of caramel that makes it really stand out. Truly one of my favorites that is under lock and key in my beer fridge! This beer is completely unavailable in my area and the only reason that I can get my hands on it is thanks to my cousin, Lisa, who supplies with a case every fall. Thank you!!

Souther Tier

IPA

ABV: 6.5%

IBUs: 65

Web Site

Incredible IPA at a decent price from local brewery out of Lakeville, NY (I need to visit!). Plenty of hoppy flavor.

Thanks to Wegman’s for always having plenty of these in stock.

Sweet Water

IPA

ABV: 6.7%

IBUs: 65

Web Site

Incredible beer from Georgia. This is the most grapefruity-hop beer I have ever had. Incredible intense Hop flavor while not being as bitter as most. Very hard to get. I usually have my fam from Georgia bring me some.

Stone

Arrogant Bastard

ABV: 7.2%

IBUs: ? (I would guess 70s)

Web Site

A very different tasting IPA that approaches a Doppel-Bock. A very bold and malty. Available only in super large bottles from the beer store. I most often enjoy this at a local pub (McGreggors).

Ithaca

Caskazilla

ABV: 7.2%

IBUs: ? (I would guess 60s)

Web Site

Another great locally brewed IPA. Tons of hops. Similar to Southern Tier IPA but with a little less grapefruit.

Mackeson

XXX

ABV: 5%

Web Site

Incredibly dark and tasty. Relatively low alcohol content. Tastes a lot like the ‘Brooklyn Black’. This beer is easy to find in my area in 12 packs and fairly cheap.

Sam Adams

Double Bock

ABV: 8.8%

Web Site

Incredible tasting bock beer with lots of caramel and malty character. It is also very strong beer as well! Yum! Very hard to find and only in limited releases.

Victory

Storm King Stout

ABV: 9.1%

Web Site

Nice dark caramelly and strong. Like the Brooklyn Chocolate but better!

Brooklyn

Monster

ABV: 11.8%

Web Site

The strongest beer on my list! This is actually a barley-wine type of beer and 12 oz is plenty – almost like 2 beers in one!

Very tasty and malty with a definite alcohol finish. You can think of it like a Sam Adams with a shot of vodka added.

I usually have one of these a night and nothing else. It lasts a while!

Spaten

Optimator

ABV: 7.2%

Web Site

Strong & heavy! I actually first sampled this beer in Epcot Center while going through the Germany section. It was the strongest beer I had ever had. I was a 12 oz draft that I sipped for over an hour. Very tasty as well. I have since had it in bottle form but it was never as strong or good. But it is included it on this list because of that first experience. Perhaps I will get that same variety again!

Avery

IPA

ABV: 6.3%

IBUs: 69

Web Site

Another Great IPA. I first had this down in Houston visiting relatives. Lots of bitterness and, of course, lots of hops!

Brooklyn

Black Chocolate Stout

ABV: 10.6%

Web Site

Incredibly strong and dark beer that can knock you out. It must be the NYC water.

Samuel Smith

Oatmeal Stout

ABV: 5.0%

Web Site

Hearty & strong with a touch a sweetness. Before I really became a beer snob, this was my favorite. It still is one of my top beers. You got to love the clear bottle and fancy label…fancy price too! Also note that this is the lowest alcohol content beer on my list which proves that a great beer doesn’t have to get you drunk fast…but it helps!

Wolaver’s

India Pale Ale.

ABV: 6.5%

IBUs: 55

Web Site

Tastes like a cross between an IPA and a Nut Brown Ale. Very good and organic too!

Brewed by the good people at the Otter Creek Brewing Company located in Vermont.
