The good ones...

Caress Of Steel Rush - 1974
Raw, ragged, unpolished, in your face. The beginning of the legecy. John Rutsy on Drums. The production quality is a little below the rest of the albums especially in the drum department, but very listenable. Rutsy's playing is respectable.
Recorded and then shelved. The band was unhappy with the mix so they had the entire project remixed by Terry brown. The production is pretty damn good for a independent record label although the drums are a bit thin. Rutsy's drumming was simple but effective. The only time Rush would sing about3 "Love", "Girls" etc. Lots of heavy riffs. Definitely a rough and raw feel. Full of youth and hunger. Songs were simpler that succeeding albums but still interesting with plenty of solos, syncronized runs, and stops to keep any Zep fan happy.

Fly By Night Fly By Night - 1975
Welcome Neil! Art Rock Lyrics, Heavy Zep influence continues. Incredible drumming will now be staple on Rush records. Alex uses a violin bow on 'Bytor' like Page did on 'Dazed and Confused'.
Enter Neil Peart. Killer drums better lyrics. This release took the Led Zeppelin leads and grooves to a more refined level. Guitar and Bass sounds were the same as before. Production was better thanks to Terry recording and mixing.

Caress Of Steel Caress Of Steel - 1975
More complex, Heavy Art-Rock. Harder to digest - but rewarding.

Departure into Art-Rock. Probably their least liked work from the early days. Rush increased the length and complexity of songs, More time-signature changes and bizzar lyrics and melodys . A real treat, although not initially comercially successful. The Sounds were as beefy and the energy was there, but it was just too much for the publc to dijest. Do to album sales and lack of direcion, Rush considers calling it quits.

caress of steel--my favourite of the pre 2112 albums.(the red headed step child of early rush albums) .'the fountain of lambeth' is awesome,insofar as it actually contains nuggets of decent music. also,it is an explicit proof of the megalomania,and hubris of early 70's 'art-rock'. it could be argued that such a high falutin,20 minute song cycle, 'suite'-er-'opus' ,a.k.a., 'the fountain of lambeth', was one of the templates,that assured its own satire in a movie like 'spinal tap'. if we're thinking in hegelian ontologies,then neil peart is not only a geek(evidenced by this 'masterwork',amongst others yet to be named); he is the sheer geist(spirit/mind) of geekness itself -- a world historical embodiment of the symbiosis between an IDEA,and a MAN. ----- nevermind that i namedropped hegel so that i would come off as suprisingly intelligent-but i'm a geek too. and whether looked at through the lense of satire,or taken at face value,i enjoy this red headed step child of RUSH's early work. i also enjoy 'lakeside park',and the trippy, spoken word part of 'the necromancer'. and,to beat a dead horse,nothing illustrates the geekness, (still love him dearly mind you),of neil peart than the chorus of 'bastille day' (a rock song commemorating the start of the french revolution???? phew.....)

2112 2112 - 1976
Cafefully crafted, seamless. The breakthrough album.
After the questionible respose of there last release, Rush hit the studio and carefully crafted their best work ever. Incredible music and a genius story line borrowed from Ian Rand, Rush exploded with energy and emotion. Rush filled up an entire abum side with one song, but the public loved it anyway. Rush was back, better than ever.

there was an early saturday morning,i'm guessing around mid-june of 1996,when i was listening to the intro to 2112,and,call me a visual guy if you must,but i saw a scene in my mind,as the tune played,of all the peace loving members of the free world, holding hands together,and looking at each other with a look that said something like, 'we believe in the free world,and we stand together in solidarity',and the perimetre of these hand holders was a solid,dare i say impeneratable, defense against all the things which assail us. i'd like to think that, in the life of every good natured,freedom loving member of humanity,there is a morning,just before sunrise,probably in early adulthood,when this moral conviction presents itself clearly to us all,and we feel the conscious choice to join hands.for me the first tune on 2112 was the soundrack to that moment.
---do you see what i mean when i say a lack of sleep, that instigates a mania which writes, and writes,ad nauseum? sorry. i'll confine my synopsis of the rest of the catalog to a couple of words,because jurisprudence behooves to get some sleep. i'll have to do my point by point response to your e-mail some other time.

all the worlds a stage- you mentioned that this was your fave. its a tough listen if you ask me. at least it was recorded at Toronto's venerable landmark,Massey Hall.

A Farwell To Kings A Farwell To Kings- 1977
More sophisticated, slightly softer and refined. First major use of synthesizers.
Enter the Synth era. The band discovered the Moog synthesizer and used it to highlight most of the works on this album. This is truely an Art-Rock album with a smoother feel than before. There is plenty of guitar, but it is cleaner and more precise thatn before. Geddy still had the sinature bass sound while Neil expanded hit kit to include a whole bunch a percussive gear.

the title track is the PERFECT opener to what became rush's 'art-rock' phase. 'cinderella man' is one of my all time favourite tunes.

Hemispheres Hemispheres -1978
Complex, clean, technically stunning.
An album that sound similiar to the last. The precision of the bands playing continues to improve. The band attempts another 'Whole abum side' tune (Hemispheres) which is carefully crafted but comes well short of 2112. The second side is the album finds comercial seccess with the FM-Radio adopted "The Trees". The last song "La Villa Strangiatto" show a musically vurtuocity that the musical relm had not previously seen.

speaking of all time faves,this album is in my top 10,seriously. killer playing. side one effortlessly illustrates my geek-rock hypothesis,BAR NONE--- a twenty minute song cycle about the ancient greek gods apollo,and dionysis,and how they battle for the mind and heart of man???????? this may very well have been responsible for the 'stonhenge scene' in 'spinal tap'???? i love 'the sphere',and 'circumstances'(which reminds me of the spring of 1990)

Perminant Waves

Perminant Waves - 1980
Less complex, slightly more modern. More melodic.
Rush continues its path of precision and sophistication. The alobum has a still softer side with almost "pretty" pretty melodys and lyrics. Rush abandons the epic length song but adheres to still-lengthy 3 songs per album side. Rush hits the mainstream with "Spirit Of Radio" and "Freewill" which still get serious airplay many years later. The use of keyboards grows but the guitar/Bass combo drives the songs. Rush is now consistently selling out shows.

you can definiteley tell that,at this point rush is wising up,and getting closer to realizing their aspiration towards mainstream acclimation. love 'jacobs ladder', 'entre nous' , different strings'?,and 'natural science.

Moving Pictures Moving Pictures -1981
The ultimate Rush album! Great melodies, Great arangements. Unmatched song writing. The pinnacle.
Another milesone record. An almost perfect balance of songwriting/comercial success and musicall sofistaication. Keyboard parts grow. Songs are less busy than previous works save "YYZ" which is one of the best instrumentals ever.

The end of the high-energy era. Great document of the best Rush years.
